Aspendale was named by James Robert Crooke, builder of the Aspendale Racecourse, after a successful racing mare called ‘Aspen’. The Aspendale Park Racecourse and pleasure grounds was opened in 1891. It was used for picnics and after 1904 for car races, before it closed in 1931.
